Last night at Westford’s Town Meeting, we voted to ask our Selectmen to start a process that will hopefully enable the boys and girl’s camps that have been operating at East Boston Camps to be open once again next summer.
The town bought this nearly 300 acre parcel two years ago with the documented intention of continuing the camps — run historically for under privileged kids as well as others including Westford kids — yet we almost lost hope for camps next summer due to a planning process that has been long and had somehow not taken the needs of next summer into account.
I have never been much of a camper but I love the woods and I can imagine how delighted the kids must be each year when they enjoy their camping experience. Thanks to the intelligence and spirit of the people of Westford there is now a very good chance that the camping tradition of East Boston Camps will continue.
I felt honored to be present at the meeting last night and be a small part of democracy at work. I have loved walking this property for the last several years and will savor it even more now that we are keeping the Camps in East Boston Camps.
