Yesterday Lad and I circumnavigated Burge’s pond, the one in the middle of East Boston Camps. With stopping to take photos (with my new canon G5 up market P&S) I think it took about half an hour. But it was a great experience. There is a trail around most of the pond right up next to it. I think this is the best way to get to know a pond, best for me since I’m a non-swimmer (that’s another story). Of course a canoe would be good too. But I think you need to see the edge where the water meets the land, hear a frog jump in as you approach and watch the ducks swimming away to take the pulse of a pond. Peter Severance, the local water specialist (among other specialties) might disagree, but for me the pond’s edge speaks most eloquently.
