Your photos of Cooper’s Hawk was helpful in identifying one that has been hanging around our home in Apopka, Fl. I have taken a few photos of her? recently and yesterday got a bonus as she killed and ate a grove mouse in our front yard maybe 30 feet from a window. I was able to get several pics as she consumed the mouse and later as she perched in a camphor tree about 20 feet above our back door. It appears to be immature and probably female but may be young male.
Thanks for your help,
Paul Martin

Dear Mr. Winters:
I just started a blog for members of my local bar assn who, like me, are in small firms. It is an attempt to help local attorneys in Baltimore County deal w/the Recession. I saw your blog on the home page of WordPress & opened it up.
This is a beautiful blog. The photos are fabulous. You have amazing content.
Much continued success.

First question is curiousity but how do you copyright all the stuff on what I guess is a blog page (sorry I don’t know much about blogging really). You say that stuff is copywrited but don’t you have to pay someone to copy right (write?) it? I have only copyrighted one thing and I have to pay a small fee to make it happen.
Next, you asked about the lesson from 9/11. It is “be aware and alert, don’t get cocky, and make sure you cover your butt.” The US was not following any of these in 2001. I would like to think we are doing so a little bit more now. And yeah, I’m one of those conspiracy theory people who think there were people that knew alot more than they let on (just like Pearl Harbor, I mean, come on). Nothing like a good attack on our native soil to get everyone all riled up so you can then easily justify invading another country, getting into a war…
And as for the whole selfish pursuit thing before taking care of the less forunate of our fellow beings – well you have to look at the big picture and, since you walk out in the woods alot (and take really nice pictures, by the way) consider the law of nature – its survival of the fittest. It is not in the nature of any creature to take care of their less fortunate fellow creatures, except humans. As humans we are at a constant struggle within ourselves between taking care of No. 1 – natural instinct, and helping others and/or following the golden rule. As I was writing to a friend of mine the other day, humans are the only animal that actually takes the time to think – “was this food treated humanely prior to it getting to my plate?” (see “Consider the Lobster”) and we actually have a large number of people on the planet who volunteerly don’t eat meat.
Its a tough world. Speak softly, but carry a really big stick.

Hi Anne,
thanks for your comments and questions.
As to world hunger and 9/11 I’ll leave my answer to a future post or six.
But regarding copyright I have a simple one: I understand that original works whether written or visual are automatically copyright protected. Some folks think that if something is posted on the Internet — as here in my blog — it is not protected and anything goes. This is untrue. We have copyright laws to protect original works. This includes works that incorporate the work of others. I do refer to the work of others but never in isolation. Hence my posts are original. (There are some of my posts that may infringe on the work of others at least in the mind of others — for example Christo and Jeanne-Claude always maintained that no photos of their installations could be legally taken. I do not agree with this but it is a matter of controversy. Nevertheless I maintain that all of my posts are my copyright protected intellectual property regardless of any controversial elements to be found therein).
See this link for a pretty clear explanation:

Thanks again,
Frank
