I have a quote from Emerson directly. It is from Man the Reformer a lecture read before the Mechanics' Apprentices' Library Association, Boston, January 25, 1841
"Love will creep where it cannot go, will accomplish that by imperceptible methods,- being its own lever, fulcrum, and power, - which force could never achieve. Have you not seen the woods, in a late autumn morning, a poor fungus or mushroom, - a plant without any solidity, nay, that seemed nothing but a soft mush or jelly,-by its constant, total, and inconceivably gentle pushing, manage to break its way up through the frosty ground and to actually lift a hard crust on its head? It is the symbol of power of kindness. The virtue of this principle in human society in application to great interests is obsolete and forgotten."

Hmmm... apart from the intriguing McKenna theories, I might be inclined to read mushrooms as the "processing of the hidden within us." Fungi play a critical role in the health of forests by processing nutrients and making them useable; they often emerge from the earth unannounced, perhaps with a little encouragement from the rain.

Regardless of their respective size in comparison to trees (although there are some huge species), I would never mushrooms to be insignificant! ;)

Always a pleasure to think on Emerson. Excellent photo choices as well!

Terence McKenna had some theories as to how certain species of mind-altering mushrooms influenced the development of language among humans. Tom Robbins, in his book Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas, has a character who espouses very similar ideas.
